At first, early prosperity for the town was threatened in the late 1920s by declining lumber production and the ripple effects of The Great Depression; however, that changed when George W. Strake discovered oil on its outskirts in 1931.
History
An economic boom brought scores of settlers into eastern Montgomery County’s Piney Woods area during 1889, and Conroe had quickly taken its place as county seat. Isaac Conroe donated his residence as the courthouse; by early 1900s four-room painted schools had been constructed near 300 Murray Street; with Madeley Quarters serving as its own black school.
Conroe was thrust into an oil boom after its discovery seven miles southeast of town in 1931. Wealth quickly accrued to Conroe; briefly boasting more millionaires per capita than any other town across America. Streets were paved, and an ornate theater called Crighton Theater was constructed.
